How to Travel from Puerto Rico to Morocco: Complete Guide
With a US passport you do not need a visa and you can fly via Miami, New York or Madrid: this is how the trip from the island is organized.
For those who live in Puerto Rico, Morocco is closer than Asia or the Pacific, and the route is flexible: you can connect through Miami or New York and cross the Atlantic on a direct flight, or go via Madrid. With a US passport, the entry procedure is also minimal.
Entry requirements from Puerto Rico
US citizens (including those from Puerto Rico) can enter Morocco without a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days. You need:
- A valid US passport, with at least six months of recommended validity and blank pages. A driver's license or REAL ID is not valid as a travel document abroad.
- A ticket out or onward travel.
- Details of your accommodation for the first nights.
- Travel insurance with medical assistance (your health plan's coverage may not apply outside the US).
Getting there: flights from San Juan
| Route | Details | Approximate total time |
|---|---|---|
| San Juan → Miami → Casablanca | Connection in Miami and a direct Royal Air Maroc flight, depending on frequencies | 12 to 16 h |
| San Juan → New York or Washington → Casablanca | Royal Air Maroc operates direct flights from these cities | 13 to 17 h |
| San Juan → Madrid → Marrakech or Casablanca | Iberia or other airlines, with a short connection to Morocco | 12 to 16 h |
From San Juan to Casablanca it is about 6,000 km in a straight line. The New York–Casablanca leg takes around seven hours, and Miami–Casablanca about eight and a half hours. Routes, airlines and frequencies change every season. Treat this as a planning guide and confirm schedules and prices in your flight search engine before buying.
Time difference
Puerto Rico does not change its clocks: Morocco is five hours ahead (four during Ramadan). Adjustment is usually quick; if you cross overnight, try to rest on the plane.
Estimated budget
As a guide, a round-trip flight can cost between 700 and 1,300 USD, with variations depending on dates. At the destination, mid-range accommodation is around 50-120 USD per night. The busiest times are Holy Week, summer and the Christmas holidays, which in Puerto Rico stretch into January.
When to travel
To avoid the extreme heat inland and in the desert, the ideal is to travel between March and May or between September and November. The long Christmas and Three Kings vacations are a good opportunity for a 10- to 14-day tour; see our proposal for New Year's Eve in Morocco.
Recommended route
- 6 days through the desert from Marrakech to Fes.
- 12 days in Morocco from Casablanca.
- Honeymoon in Morocco, if you are traveling as a couple.
Practical tips
- Money: the currency is the dirham (MAD). You can exchange dollars on arrival and use cards at ATMs and hotels.
- Mobile: check your carrier's roaming or buy a data eSIM.
- Plugs: Morocco uses type C/E at 220 V, different from the US; you need an adapter.
- Language: our service is in Spanish, and the guide will accompany you throughout the trip.
